The Popular Art of Traditional and Modern Hawaiian Hula

The Hula is the very popular dance of Polynesians particularly Hawaiians. No one really knows how this form of dance originated but many agree that this was first performed by gods and goddesses, thus making it a sacred tradition. Originally it was only performed during religious celebrations but it gradually developed into a form of entertainment not only for Hawaiians but for all.

Each and every move in hula represents a certain meaning. That is why every movement is significant even the small hand gestures. Usually, the dancer’s body represents a certain plant, animal, event or story. The dancer interprets the message or theme through sleek motions. Because hula is a form of religious worship, hula has to be learned in hula schools called halau. Other than the hula lessons, there are other policies which have to strictly obeyed by hula students. Rules like they are not allowed to cut their hairs and nails, certain foods are prohibited. Also, they are not allowed to engage in any sexual activities. This just goes to show that hula is a very complex form of dance that is full of movements that may signify different interpretations.

Two forms of Hawaiian hula are known today. The two differ from the kind of accompaniment the dancer dances to. The first one is accompanied by a chant and is called kahiko in Hawaiian. The other one is very similar to kahiko only modernized. It is usually accompanied by a song and more modern musical instruments such as a guitar, bass or ukulele. The latter form of hula is also called ‘auana.

The kahiko form of hula is accompanied by chants. Generally the chants’ themes include that of Hawaiian history, tradition, mythology and significant events in their lives. In the absence of a written history, chants are the most reliable form of such. Originally, female hula dancers were topless but wore wrapped skirts. Today the skirt is modified to cover up to the waist. Dancers also wear decorative lei in the form of necklace, anklets and bracelets. The lei has to be freshly-picked in the forest after these have been blessed by forest gods ad goddesses.

The auana is the more modern form of hula which is patterned with kahiko. It was hula with a slight Western touch. Unlike the kahiko whose themes are more on myths and religion, this type of hula includes events that happened since the 1980s. Another difference is that costumes tend to be more conservative and less revealing and its accompaniment is a Western version of their chants. These songs vary in subject. These may include personal experiences or may express opinions or emotions.

Since the 1970s many people have regained interest in traditional and modern hula. Today the Hawaiian hula is not only limited to Polynesians. It has earned recognitions and has become a commendable form of interpretive dance especially in the Western regions. The dance was even featured on so many Hollywood films, a sign that it has appealed positively to many people.

Popular Flowers in Hawaii

A flower symbolizes a lot of what we feel. Most often they convey the message of love and attraction. In Hawaii, flowers play a major role in culture and the arts. It is one of the essential parts of their fashion, dance and festivals.

When you arrive at Hawaii, you will receive a lei. Leis are used to symbolize affection and love. They are commonly made from natural flowers that are popularly grown in Hawaii. Their Hawaiian orchids are the main source of flowers in their leis. They are naturally fragrant and take a longer time to lose their healthy glow. Some of the best orchids grown in Hawaii are Sharry Baby, Dendrobium and the Cattleya. Sharry Baby could last from two to four weeks. Dendrobium is elegant and comes in different colors. It comes in blood orange to tender pink. The cattleya gives a rich fragrance and a very gorgeous physical apprearance.

The flowers in Hawaii represent much of what you could expect in the islands. Their bright colors and exotic styles say that Hawaii is the placed to be because of its beauty and peace. The Hibiscus flower is the state flower of Hawaii. It is also called ma’o hau hele or pua aloalo in their local language. The hibiscus flower is large with up to 6 inches in diameter. It is naturally yellow with a center of maroon. It is actually from the hibiscus shrub that is used for most landscaping purposes in Hawaii. For those who don’t know, hibiscus is also used to make paper, teas and jams. There were also experiments that led to check the therapeutic benefits of its extract. The fibers of the hibiscus bark are also used as a material in grass skirts.

Hawaii has lots of the most beautiful flowers in the world. They also have exotic flowers like protea. Protea lasts for a longer time compared to the other flowers found in Hawaii along with their orchids. They could also be appreciated even with a dry look. Protea was named after the Greek God of the Sea, Proteus. They actually have lived for 300 years now due to the evidences found in fossils. Protea are excellent for flower arrangements in weddings and special occasions. After drying, they still provide the elegant muted look.

There are still more flowers that you could see in Hawaii. If you love to see the differences in each I am sure that you will have a lot of time inspecting, smelling and capturing their beauty in pictures. I am starting to collect the orchids on my own home and I have already a wide variety of them. I am still planning to have more from the list of flowers that I have mentioned here.

Visitors who come to Hawaii get so delighted when receiving their leis. They even receive one when they leave. The hospitality and beauty of Hawaii is truly captured in its flowers. I am collecting much love right now and soon I could gather all the love in Hawaii.

Hawaiian Hula Dance Accessories

One thing that attracts tourist to Hawaii aside from the lovely beaches is the dance that the people perform to their visitors. It is the grace that sets the dancers apart from the other dancers seen on other tourist destinations all around the world. The Hula dance, the most popular dance from Hawaii brings joy to tourists and even to the local residents. The dance and the fashion of Hula has already reached and conquered other countries.

The dances in Hawaii tell so much of the rich culture that the Hawaiians have. The costumes and accessories are with extraordinary beauty that makes tourist get attracted. One of the accessories I like most in the hula dance costume are the colorful and exotic flowers on the dancers’ ears and hands and the perfect leis on their neck.

The Hawaiian Leis are symbols of affection and welcome. They are usually given to visitors but now they are used widely as a huge accessory in the hula fashion. They are also very important factors that make weddings more attractive and lovely. The leis come in different colors and styles. One of the traditional leis is the Maille Leaf Lei. It is composed mainly of the woven Maille leaf that is also very sweet-smelling. Also one of the most popular is the dendrobium orchids. The leis could also come not only with flowers but also with shells, seeds and feathers.

The next accessory that I appreciate most is the hula skirt. They also come in different festive colors that are made from different materials. The skirts are mostly made from raffia but they could also be made out of leaves. They also come in different lengths. The short hula skirts now becoming more popular compared to the long ones.

Next accessory that brings me awe are the bras. They can be made with flowery clothe but now the shell bra and coconut bras are already being accepted. The shell bra brings a wide imagination to the one wearing it and she may feel like a true mermaid. The coconut bras are the dried coconut halves that have been hallowed, smoothed and varnished to give comfort to the one using it. The bikini bras in all different styles could really enhance the overall look of the dancer.

Dancing the hula does not only start and end with knowing the movements and learning the grace. You must also have the most attractive costume and accessory to fully provide the feeling of being a hula dancer. The choices are many for as long as you are open to wearing sexy on those outfits.

I could already see myself in that perfect hula fashion statement. I have shopped all over Hawaii just to get my desired skirt color and length, the most fragrant and colorful leis, the sexy bras and the flowers that could compliment my overall look. Dancing hula all night long could not bring me stress after I know that the costume looks so good on me. Go get your own hula outfit now and lets dance the hula till be die.

In the Pacific, several artifacts and work of art can be seen in different art galleries. Most art pieces are from Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia and Indonesia. These galleries showcase a wide variety of art pieces like masks, figures, fabrics and architectural components, even bowls and other helpful elements. Art galleries focus on different things that an artist’s want to specify. One great thing this gallery could offer is the chance for the exhibitor to showcase his own piece of art. Other art galleries exhibit ancient artifacts about certain cultural background depending on the country or place that they want to boost. The basis of choosing things that an art gallery could display may depend on the prerogative of the artist. This is also in line with the Artist’s personal conviction.

In Hawaii for example, there are well known art galleries in the island. These galleries flaunt the amazing history of the island through displaying their culture using different artifacts. Some well-known art galleries in the island are Fine Art Associates at the Artloft located at Honolulu, which pieces are inspired from the traditional style, making them into a more contemporary attack. Then another one is the Island art gallery that provide a wide variety of artwork at the same time display framework in a customarily way. Kim Taylor Reece gallery features the work of Kim Taylor Reece who was known as Hawaii’s leading photographer that display hula and hawaiiana. There are also some artists that are environmentally inspired like the Galerie Lassen of Christian Riese Lassen.

There is also a gallery which purpose is for helping students and faculty members of the Art department to exhibit the historical and contemporary art of hawaii, this is the University Of Hawaii Art Gallery. The Naturally Hawaiian Gallery parade the passion of Patrick Ching a prominent wildlife artist. These art galleries truly reveal the colorful world of the island.

In Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, some galleries exhibit some famous artifacts of the country. One famous inhabitants of the country are the Asmat, they are known as warriors renowned for their warfare and hunting skills. Asmat shields or Jamasj is one great artifact which is displayed in most galleries in New Guinea and Indonesia. These shields are believed to have the ability to protect the Asmat from the spiritual powers and physical attacks of the enemy. This shield has different kinds as well. One that was found in Indonesia is adorned with tree kangaroo tail outline while there is another one is carved with a very strange floral shape.

Most countries in the Pacific are of different ethnic origin. The history of each one can be seen through the product of their masterpieces. It is always an advantage that people can learn something about the culture, beliefs and even history of a certain country through art. It is no doubt that this medium through the use of such galleries constitute a vast approach of revealing the true side of what happen at the past. Then at the same time these pieces of art can be enhanced through the unique style of different artists. In fact this is the most powerful feature art pieces can give humankind.

Running out of money, he couldn’t start and make the place a real gallery and neither could he afford to advertise for launching the gallery as well as making a sign for his business. What he did was put his brothers’ paintings in the window of unfinished space and started his operations. Email from an artist who wants to be a business person

Here is a hilirious email from a wanna be artist who still thinks like a sorry business man…..
Their Jaws Dropped When I Told Them I Was Invited To Show My Work In A
Important Art Gallery
How it happened to me and how it can happen to you
If you’re like me and you have lots of artist friends, you know that every
one of them secretly wants to be in a major gallery, and they all want to
be in a museum. Who wouldn’t? Being in a top-tier gallery can be your
ticket to success. It can increase your collector base and can bring your
prices up — which drives your income up — and it might get you noticed
by a museum. So you should have seen the faces of my friends when I told
them I’d gotten a call from a major gallery that wanted to feature my
artwork. Their jaws were hanging down and they were speechless. Though
everyone was very happy for me, I could tell they were a little envious.
“How did that happen?” they asked. I told them what I’m about to tell you.
Here’s my story.
The Struggle
When I started painting, I thought it would be easy, but nothing could be
further from the truth. The more I painted, the harder it got, as I
realized how much I was missing in my work. How did they do that, with the
light, the color harmony, the edges, the composition, the brush strokes? I
painted like a madman to try to master my craft. My dream was to get good
enough to sell my work so I could quit my job and be a full-time artist.
And my dream came true!
My Insecurity
Though I received compliments from friends and family, I thought, “What do
they know about art? The only way I’ll really know if my work is good is
if people buy it, I get believable complements from other artists I
respect, or if I win awards.” But, frankly, the best validation I could
receive was to be invited into an art gallery that I know sells quality
artwork. To start out, I did some art shows. The first show, I put up the
tent, painted a huge body of work, and sold my first painting! I was on
top of the world. I’ll never forget that moment. But then my insecurity
kicked in … maybe they had no taste. So I did another show and sold six
more. What a boost to my ego. “I’m ready,” I thought. But finding a
gallery wouldn’t be easy.
Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You
When I started the search for a gallery, I looked online for galleries
that sold paintings and where my work would fit. I sent e-mails off to
several and never heard from any of them. So I put together some nice
portfolios with pictures of my work and sent them out. Again, no response.
I spent hours chasing galleries on my own and got nowhere. Finally, I
started calling around, and, frankly, it was a little embarrassing. “Send
us something and if we’re interested we’ll get back to you,” said one
fellow. “We’re not looking for any artists at the moment,” said another.
It seemed like doors shut every time I turned around. It got very
discouraging.
How I Was Discovered
They say you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince. I
think it’s the same with galleries. Not only do they have to be looking
for an artist at the time you reach them, you have to fit their style and
what they’re looking for. The odds of finding the right fit are pretty
slim unless you contact a lot of galleries a lot of times. I learned that
the problem is that galleries receive so many unsolicited presentations,
e-mails, and photos from artists that they don’t even look at most of it.
I had to find a way to get them to look. And I had to find a way to get my
work in front of hundreds of galleries. That’s when I discovered Artist
Advocate.
The Perfect Partnership For An Artist
I learned that this magazine, Artist Advocate, is sent to 6,500 art
galleries around the U.S. and some other countries. The entire magazine is
designed to showcase the work of artists who are looking for a gallery
(either a first gallery or an additional gallery). Because the art
galleries can easily look at a lot of artists in one place, it makes their
job easier. And because they look at every issue, I can keep my name and
artwork in front of them frequently. I want to be there when they are in
the market for a new artist. So I bought a listing in Artist Advocate and
put images of a couple of my best paintings in the ad. Signing up was easy
(I did it online with a single click), and all I had to do was e-mail them
the images and the information about me. Because I could put it on my
credit card, I didn’t have to come up with all the cash at once. And they
did all the artwork for the ad.
The Unexpected Happened To Me
No matter how much self-promotion I did, I never could have reached this
gallery. “Hello, we’re opening a new gallery in Chicago,” said the lady on
the phone. “We saw your work in Artist Advocate, went to your website and
looked at more of your work, and we like it. We’re interested in carrying
your artwork.” Just like that. There is no way I could have known of a new
gallery opening up, but it was the former director of a gallery that had
received the magazine. The chances of my stumbling into this were next to
nonexistent, no matter how many e-mails and portfolios I’d sent.
So Why Not Just Do It Yourself?
Sure, you can do what I did and do your own promotional e-mail and
mailings. If I bought a mailing list, I might end up with a bunch of frame
shops that call themselves galleries. And my mail or e-mail might end up
in a pile to be viewed someday, if it doesn’t go to the trash or the spam
filter first. Plus, the cost of a list, the mailings, and the time would
far exceed the cost of a listing ad in Artist Advocate. These people at
Artist Advocate have a great list of galleries that sell original
artworks, and, because Artist Advocate shows a lot of artists in one
place, it makes the selection process for galleries easier. There is a
better chance they will read it and see my work than if I become one of
the hundreds who are soliciting the galleries every year. Plus, I’ll be
one of a few artists highlighted in this magazine, which means I’ll stand
out. And the galleries will probably keep it, so they can refer back to it
when they’re in the mood to find new artists. Artist Advocate solves the
galleries’ problem AND it solves mine.
The Beauty Of My Freedom
The best part about finding this gallery is that now I don’t have to set
up tents and sit in the rain and hope someone buys a painting. I was able
to quit my job and now my gallery sells my artwork for me — and they put
it in front of people who buy art, not people looking to fill time on
their weekend. They are getting higher prices for my work than I could on
my own, and they promote me so I don’t have to promote myself. Best of
all, I can paint again, and let others focus on marketing my work.
What About You?
Are you looking for another gallery or a first gallery?
Do you want to focus more on painting?
Are you uncomfortable calling galleries and asking them to look at your
work?
Can you easily reach 6,500 galleries on your own?
Sign up for the next issue of Artist Advocate. Deadline to book an ad is
August 18, 2008.
